Creative Images Institute of Cosmetology (CIIC), with two locations in the Dayton area, is one of only 18 institutions in the world which offers advanced hands-on training in precision haircutting and coloring using Sassoon methodology. For nearly 30 years, CIIC has provided advanced training, educational fieldtrips, and partnerships with Ohio salons/spas, as part of our mission to assist students in finding their career. Ohio House of Representative Niraj Antani (R-District 42) visited us on December 20th; provide students the opportunity to share their questions and concerns about the future of the beauty industry and how a recent proposed bill (HB 189) would negatively impact their lives.
Although many concerns were voiced, the majority were focused on lowering education outcomes in the public’s health through sanitation, the student’s ability to own their own salon/spa to protect people. If the house bill goes into effect, some skills, such as braiding, would no longer need a license. Many students also expressed a concern with their confidence level with the program as is; depleting their educational hours by a third would also deplete their knowledge levels and experience. This would make it more difficult for students to not only get employed but also limit them to the type of salon or spa they would work.
Two students commented on the potential repercussions of the legislative passing; “I’d rather spend 500 additional hours training in school and then going to a job than have to rely on an unpaid apprenticeship and lose my schooling and opportunity to work at a paying job.” Another student stressed; “We pack so much education into every minute of every day—I couldn’t imagine cutting out 500 hours because that will cut out so much education.”
After nearly an hour and a half of give and take, students and staff gave their appreciation to Representative Antani for speaking with them and listening to their concerns. As a summation of the event, Representative Antani agreed to return to CIIC for a haircut so he could really learn what this industry is all about.
