Creative Images Institute of Cosmetology (CIIC), with two locations in the Dayton area, is one of only 17 institutions in the world which offers advanced hands-on training in precision haircutting and coloring the Sassoon way. For nearly 30 years, CIIC has provided advanced training, educational fieldtrips, and partnerships with Ohio salons/spas, as part of our mission to assist students in finding their career fit, Representative Jim Butler (R-District 41) visited us on March 27th as an outside expert to provide students the opportunity to share their questions and concerns about the future of the beauty industry and how a recent house bill (HB 189) may negatively impact their lives.
During the meeting at our Centerville campus, over 50 students and staff expressed their apprehensions about decreasing education as proposed in the house bill. Between developing their technical skills, communication skills to work with clients, and learning the daily operation aspects of the industry; students stressed how they were afraid that less experience and exposure would only harm their career opportunities. The vast majority of students expressed that they would much rather have their education extended so they can gain even more practice. One student stated; “We feel like we are being pushed into a box by the types of salons that are supporting the bill and we’re not able to decide our own careers”. According to the IBISWorld Industry Report on Hair & Nail Salons in the U.S., business expertise of operations and maintenance of excellent customer relations are two critical success factors for this industry (report 81211, October, 2017). This bill would cause students to receive less training in those two key factors during their time in school and because of that, another student stressed, “This bill is setting us up to fail.”
After nearly two hours of give and take, students and staff gave their appreciation to Representative Butler for speaking with them and listening to their concerns. As a summation of the event, Representative Butler agreed to return to CIIC for a hair service and the students couldn’t be more excited!
