Luckily, we have 5 easy steps for you to start utilizing TODAY that will help you beeline to a more prosperous, rewarding, and successful nail tech career! Give us a quick read and note what step you want to start with first when it comes to growing your own business.
Nail Technicians Always Practice
This is so important to practice, practice, practice. Get your basics down, whether it’s prepping, shaping, application, filing– all of that is so important to hone in on at the beginning of your career. Once you get that done, then you can start moving into the more intricate details of the career field. A lot of people rush through the basics so they can get to the more design oriented portion of their career. However, unique designs and character are what brings the clients, consistently nailing down the basics is what keeps them.
Nail Technicians Are Always Learning New Things
Not just in the nail technician field, but all throughout the beauty industry, trends and styles are constantly changing. We highly recommend that in order to stay on top of your game and keep your clientele rotation fresh and consistent, push yourself to continue to learn. Don’t be afraid to find your niche in this industry and really hone in on it. Challenge yourself to get a new certification each year, take that refreshment course, learn more about the operational side of the industry– whatever you fancy! Just please do not stop learning. Not only will this keep you up-to-date on the latest trends and designs, but it will also allow you to appeal to more and more clients in turn growing your business. Never be content.
Nail Technicians Wear Their Work
We recommend doing this for a multitude of reasons. For starters– it’s free advertisement! People use their hands for almost everything making your nails a focal point. If someone notices your nails, it’s as easy as introducing yourself and your trade, and exchanging your contact information with them and BOOM! A potential new client. Use the resources that you already have and run with them! Aside from it being an easy way to attract more business, your nails are also great to practice on. If you have a new product or technique you’re looking to test out, it’s best to test it out on yourself first before offering it to any of your clients. This will allow you to get comfortable with the products and services you are providing and will allow you to enter each appointment with confidence in knowing that you’re bringing the best tools and skills to the table.
Nail Technicians Work Smarter, Not Harder
We touched upon this a little bit in the previous bullet, but when it comes to advertising and marketing yourself, use the free resources that you already have access to. When it comes to social media, make sure you’re utilizing all of the free tags that come along with each platform. What we mean by this is capitalize on using hashtags, specifically location driven ones. For example, try using hashtags such as; #DaytonNails #DaytonNailDesign #Dayton #DaytonOhio #DaytonNailTech #DaytonNailTechnicians, etc. Another feature you should utilize is the physical location tag. For this, we recommend using something that has a significant amount of check-in points because that means that that location is visited frequently. However, you don’t want to utilize anything too vague such as “Ohio”, or even “Dayton, Ohio” because of the large influx of location tags those get on a consistent basis, meaning your posts will get buried quickly. Try something along the lines of “Dayton Mall” or “Austin Landing”. These are both locations with hundreds of visitors each day to wear the location will gain traction, but they’re not places that are completely overwhelmed by visitors that a new post will come and go in a matter of minutes. Another easy and free marketing tactic to use on social media is to tag the brands you’re using! Anything from the nail polish brand to your shaping kits or even your hand lotion. Tag your brands in addition to your location and hashtags and gain loyal followers. All of these features are free on both Instagram and Facebook, so why not utilize the tools that are given to you before splurging on other areas?
Another cheap/ free form of advertising is word of mouth. Wherever you go throughout your day, carry a stack of business cards with you. When you go to grab your cup of coffee from the barista, and she notices your nails, simply explain that you did them yourself and pass her your card. It’s as simple as that when it comes to making a connection and potentially earning yourself a new client just by doing what you do every day.
Nail Technicians Always Have A Positive Attitude
Clients can feed off of your energy. If you come into the shop with a negative outlook on the day, whether you spilled your coffee all over yourself on your way to work, you got a flat tire, you and your significant other are having a spat, that all translates into your work. Not only will your clients be hesitant to talk with you, but when they do, it will tend to be in a more pessimistic tone. Mistakes that are typically considered minor may be blown up into larger issues because they’ll feel that your attitude is causing you to slip up, when really, you didn’t have a good drip on the brush. Whatever is weighing you down outside of work, leave it at the door and come in with a clear and balanced mind so you can give each client your best honest work. Especially if you are working under someone else– you don’t want to be the reason your salon/ spa loses a client.
