7 Reasons Why Your Skin May Be Acting Out
Just like all of the organs in our bodies, our skin can be incredibly sensitive to what we put on and in our bodies. Everything from overexposure to heat and light to under serving ourselves water and vegetables, our skin can react to a myriad of different corresponding variables. Something as simple as not getting enough sleep at night can have a negative impacts on our pores. When it comes to our skin, maintaining it isn’t a part-time job! Hopefully with these skincare hacks, you can start to snap some of these bad habits in the butt and get yourself on your way to refreshed, hydrated looking skin just in time for the harsh winter months ahead!
1. Washing Your Face at the Wrong Time
Most of us have a shower routine that we perform ritually every time we step under the water, but is it in the right order? Because most hair products contain a pore-clogging chemical called Isopropyl Myristate, it’s best to wash your face AFTER you shampoo and condition your hair. Leaving small traces of those products on your skin can lead to minor irritants throughout your day or while your sleep.
2. Maintaining a Sedentary Lifestyle
It’s no surprise that living a sedentary lifestyle can cause more harm than just to your joints and waistline. It also can leave a negative impact on your skin, which is often harder to undo than simply just adapting a more active lifestyle. Being sedentary can actually add years and signs of premature aging to your skin. Everything from a blotchy skin tone, dark circles under your eyes, and even deep rooted wrinkles can all formulate at a quicker rate due to a lack of blood flow through your lymph nodes. On the bright side, it’s never too late to just start a more active lifestyle! Being active improves your blood circulation, giving skin a healthy, youthful glow. The reason your body gets that pink hue after a workout is actually the dilation of blood vessels, allowing the area to be washed with nutrients and oxygen rich blood.
3. Using Too Many Different Skin Care Products
When possible, try and prevent cross-brand interactions. A simple skin routine with products from the same line that complement each other (like Origins Recruitment Set from Sephora!) will give you the best results, faster simply because those products were purposefully designed to interact with one another. Think of it this way– if you were to pull 5 football players from 5 different teams, sure, they may perform decent simply because they’re decent players. However, they perform better when they play with their original team because they know and understand the team dynamics. Where one teammate amy struggle, another may flourish, filling in the gaps for one another so they can each shine where they’re needed. Skincare products act in the same way. Using too versed of products may result in a routine with too much of one ingredient and not enough of another. Often skincare lines balance pH levels across their line as to not shock the skin, especially products aimed at dry skin or acne. To keep things safe, it’s best to follow a skincare routine checklist similar to this: cleanser, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen, nighttime repair product, and a gentle scrub.
4. Your Make-Up Isn’t Working Out
Believe it or not, make-up acts as a barrier between the outside world and our skin, and sweating under it can lead to breakouts. Also, make sure to change any tight clothes, such as yoga pants, immediately after exercising to prevent bacteria from multiplying. – We’ve all done it. You come home exhausted and don’t feel like washing the day’s make-up off your face. However, what people don’t know is that your skin goes through a renewal process in the night so, at minimum, you should reach your sleepy hand over and grab the make-up removal wipes. Some make-up contains ingredients that irritate the skin and can prevent it from proper regeneration at night. – That being said, as your skin heals itself overnight it secretes toxins from your pores that need to be rinsed off as soon as possible before more damage is caused.
5. Too Hot to Touch
This may be a hard one to adjust to, especially as we migrate into the inevitable winter months. When it’s cold and wet and dark outside, sometimes a steamy hot shower seems like the perfect solution. Unfortunately it’s not. Transitioning our skin through such a harsh temperature change from below freezing to almost boiling can be detrimental to your skincare efforts and lead to dryness and dehydration. To counter this, vouch for lukewarm showers followed by a thorough pat down. To get your body temperature up, try drinking tea or hot chocolate or wearing a thick pair of socks to generate heat throughout.
6. Ignoring Your Eyes
Large sunglasses aren’t just for the rich and famous, darling. Our eyes are some of the most sensitive parts of our bodies and that’s why eyelids are the most common place to find skin cancer. Shading your eyes from the sun’s rays (both on sunny days and cloudy) will help ensure you stay on the right track for health and protection. It’s also imperative that you do not forget to moisturize your eyelids! Because of the makeup and brute force our eyelids face on a daily basis, they are very susceptible to dryness and flaking, and that’s not something you want floating around your eyeballs (Gross!)
7. My Neck, My Hands
Lastly, but certainly not least, don’t forget about your neck and hands, fam! When you are applying your daily moisturizer, make sure to blend in the excess product and do a few passes over your entire neck, front and back, and over the back of your hands. Always use sunscreen on your hands and neck too, especially in the summer heat. Aside from our faces, these are the parts of our bodies that see the most light and interact with the outside elements, which is why we need to give them the most attention. In addition, with how often we touch our faces, whether on purpose or out of sheer habit, having the skin on your hands be in optimal shape will also positively impact the amount of oil and dirt our hands transfer to our faces. If possible, try avoiding touching your face or do so with only clean hands.
